It is suggested that the migration pattern is a cultural expression due to the ethno-linguistic minority situation and the cultural closeness. Among the distinct effects of migration are the stimulation of further migration through the displacement of other peoples; a reduction in the numbers of the migrating group because of hardship and warfare; changes in physical characteristics through intermarriage with the groups encountered; changes in cultural characteristics by adoption of the cultural patterns of peoples encountered; and linguistic changes, also effected by adoption. Anthropologists and archaeologists have traced the routes of many prehistoric migrations by the current persistence of such effects. Blond physical characteristics among some of the Berbers are thought to be evidence of an early Nordic invasion. Ethnic and cultural diversity is a fact which can and should enrich social life in all parts of the world. These scholars both powerfully praise and powerfully depreciate Twain’s artistic judgment in relation to Huck’s character, themes, and political statements, but Jim’s place is often ignored or overlooked. Jim’s character is very important in his roles in supporting Huck as a father figure, his example for Twain’s portrayal of slavery and racism, and in his own right as a multifaceted, moving, and developing individual. Jim plays the role of the father by providing for Huck's physical, personal, emotional, and moral well-being. He begins by simply supplying necessary food and shelter for the â€Å"dead† boy. Jim continues in this role throughout the novel. He seems to always be out hooking fish or cooking make-shift meals for Huck. He takes it upon himself to build "a snug wigwam [on their raft] to get under in blazing weather and rainy, and to keep things dry." (48). On the other hand, when Huck is at his real father's (Pap’s) cabin, he has to stop up the holes "to keep the wind from blowing through the chinks and putting the candle out" (18-19). Jim also advises Huck about his personal life. From the very beginning of the novel when he sees his father's boot prints, Huck establishes a precedent of going to Jim for advice. Despite the slave's fearful superstitions, his advice is mostly sound, as seen when he advises against boarding the Walter Scott and against loo king at â€Å"Pap’s† face. Huck's physical well-being is consistently under Jim’s protection. He passively protects Huck from the villains and nice old ladies of civilization and town meetings by keeping the raft always ready to dash back to the protection and solitude of the might Mississippi river. By lying to the King and Duke for him after they catch up with Huck on the river and threaten him, Jim actively risks himself to physically protect Huck. Today’s teenagers seem to have more time and less responsibility and supervision than the last generation’s. It’s quite common to see teens â€Å"hanging out† at shopping centers, fast food restaurants or where ever they can get together to socialize. Usually, they just have fun and enjoy themselves, but sometimes problems occur. Teenagers who are bored and looking for something to do are likely to get into trouble and become involved in unhealthy, inappropriate or illegal activities. The increased number of unoccupied and unsupervised teens in may be related to the loss of many family farms and business and to the increase in single parent families. Many teens in the last generation were expected to share the responsibility and work of a family farm or business. They were supervised, learned important skills and didn’t have time to get into mischief. Today, most parents work away from the family, and teens are left to occupy themselves . Also, single parents and parents who are both working are often unable to adequately supervise their teenager’s activities. Teens need free time to spend with friends, relax and have fun. They need to learn how to find appropriate, healthy activities and entertainment. Free time can teach them important skills they will need as adults. Unfortunately, too much free time can cause problems. Not all teenagers are able to find appropriate, healthy activities and entertainment for themselves when they are not occupied and supervised. Following are some things parents can do to help teens learn to be responsible, have fun and stay out of trouble. †¢Set specific rules about family expectations, such as time to be home, chores and responsibilities, etc. Allow teens to help make decisions about rules and consequences. †¢Give younger teens specific responsibilities and chores. offer opportunities to earn extra privileges or money for doing extra chores. Allow teens to spend money they earn on things they want. †¢Encourage older teens to get a part time job. Jobs provide and opportunity to meet people, learn new skills and earn extra money. †¢Talk with older teens and encourage them to think about their goals and what they would like to be doing when they are adults. Help them plan activities working toward their goals. †¢Know where teens will be. Call and check occasionally, or ask them to check in periodically. If they are at home, ask a family member, neighbor or friend to stop by if possible. †¢Encourage teens to become involved in community programs, recreational activities and special events that they are interested in. Check into activities available in the community, such as scouting, softball, YMCA, camps, church activities, clubs, etc.

Doing Business in Thailand

Thailand†s booming economy has encouraged me to begin a new business relationship with a highly recognized Thai company. I manufacturer a line of products for the sugar processing industry. I recently signed a one-year contract with Thai Chemiclas and Engineering Co. Ltd., located in Bangkok, to be my exclusive representative in the Thailand area. Thai Chemicals and Engineering will promote my product line and get it into the all the sugar mills in the area. They will purchase two containers per month for which we have negotiated a compatible price. The containers will be shipping out of Savannah, Georgia with a final destination of the port of Bangkok. The shipping terms will be CIF: Bangkok. I decided to use a local company to represent my product line for various reasons. First of all, I need someone that knows the culture and business environment who has an established relationship with other locals. Once my products become known, I would like to establish a! factory in Thailand. Therefore, I found it necessary to gather all the information required to begin a new business in Thailand. Although business can be 100 % owned by foreign investors, some are reserved for 51 % Thai ownership. People of any nationalities can participate in ownership to varying degrees: through sole ownership, a limited companycorporation, an ordinary partnership, a limited partnership, or a branch of a foreign corporation. The Ministry of Commerce's Department of Commercial Registration is directly in charge of company registration. The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) is a well-developed financial institution which welcomes foreign investment. Bangkok's modern Don Muang International Airport can easily serve your arrivals or connections. Thailand is equipped with an extensive and ever-developing transport infrastructure and an extensive state-run rail system. There are numerous shipping ports including Bangkok's Klong Toey Port and the Eastern Seaboard's Mab Ta Phut and Laem Chabang deep-sea ports within 200 kilometres of Bangkok. Typical business hours are : for banks and financial institutions, Monday – Friday 9:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.; Government offices, Monday -Friday 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. (closed noon – 1 p.m.); private business, Monday – Friday from 8:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. The Royal Thai Government (RTG) has been reducing import duties and trade barriers as part of its obligations as a founding member of the World Trade Organization (WTO) and as a member of the Association of South East Asian Nations' (ASEAN) Free Trade Area (AFTA). A Factory Establishment Licence must be obtained from the Ministry of Industry. Fees depend on machinery power rating and the number of employees. Arbitrary customs valuation procedures constitute another barrier to U.S. exports. The Thai Customs Department may use as a check price the highest previously invoiced price of a product imported from any given country and may disregard actual invoiced values in favor of the check price for assessment purposes. On June 6, 1995, the Thai Cabinet approved a policy to require, on a case by case basis, countertrade on government procurement contracts valued at over 500 million baht ($20 million) Thailand maintains several programs that subsidize exports, including preferential financing for exporters. Thailand's export-import bank, established in September 1993, is responsible for some of these programs, particularly the packing credit program. One of the most prominent trade issues between the United States and Thailand has been the extent of Thailand's protection for U.S. copyright, patent and trademark holders. The Kingdom of Thailand respects all international laws regarding copyrights and trademarks. Thailand passed a new copyright law in December 1994 that strengthened legal copyright protection and increased the penalties for copyright infringement Amendments to the trademark law in 1992 provide higher penalties for infringement and extend protection to services, certification, and collective marks. Under current Thai regulation, only persons of Thai nationality may be licensed in many professional services, including accounting, architecture, engineering, construction management, brokerage services and legal services. However, there is planning to revise these regulations. The announcement of National Executive Council No. 281, commonly known as the Alien Business Law, limits foreign equity in many Thai firms to less than fifty percent. The Treaty of Amity and Economic Relations between Thailand and the United States provides for 100 percent U.S. ownership of companies in most industries. Businesses in the fields of communications, transport, fiduciary functions, natural resources, or trade in agricultural products are excluded from treaty coverage. The Communications Authority of Thailand imposes stringent equity and revenue sharing requirements on International Value Added Network Service (IVANs) providers. In conclusion, The World Bank predicts that Thailand will be the world's eighth largest economy within 20 years by the year 2020. Thailand will have a larger economy than Brazil, Britain, France, Italy and Taiwan. Thailand's own National Economic and social Development Board has seen a doubling of the economy in the year 2000 and the Kingdom ranking first in Southeast Asia, among the seven ASEAN states. I feel that this is the perfect timing to invest and I am confident that my business will prosper.

Review of Pan's Travail essays J. Donald Hughes, Pans Travail, (Baltimore, 1994), 277 pp. Oddly enough, there is little biographical information available on J. Donald Hughes. His special interest in the Mediterranean and sacred groves is evidenced by the numerous books and articles he has published on the subject. He is multilingual, fluent in German, Greek, and Spanish with basic skills in French and Russian as well. He received his doctorate in History from Boston University and then taught at several different colleges. He is currently a History professor at the University of Denver, and the author of eight other books and articles about environmental history. The first four chapters (out of eleven total) are dedicated to providing the reader with background information. Hughes gives an overview of environmental history and ecology as a whole, preparing the reader to narrow the focus of these concepts to a single area: the Mediterranean Basin. He also describes this region and discusses why it is such a unique ecosystem. Not only are climate, land, and sea addressed, but a charming section on the different winds of each section of the region is also included. Pre-history is touched upon, and Hughes examines Egyptian and Mesopotamian societies and their relationships with nature. By showing how each city dealt differently with the flooding of their respective rivers, Hughes illustrates two opposing views towards nature. Literary evidence shows how Greek and Roman religion viewed the world as a sacred place. This contrasts with the view eventually offered by such philosophers as Aristotle which placed nature in hierarchical order, with plants exist[ing] for the sake of animals, animals for the sake of man, and...inferior men [as] natural slaves of the superior (60). In order to achieve this goal, human resource management must be a strategic part of any organization. I have undertaken a qualitative investigation of National Grid. I have through a detail questionnaire conducted research to assess the current level of employee satisfaction working for the organization. This paper is my assessment of that satisfaction and I make recommendations for its improvement. I have identified three key problem areas from my primary research that I have undertaken which I will analyze. After a review of the literature concerning these three problem areas, I will address these three primary issues and explain the goals and objectives of the initiatives that must be taken to achieve the expected outcomes. Furthermore, to allow some context to be formed around the organization I provide some analysis in the next section on the background and strategic outline of National Grid. Background of National Grid National Grid plc is a network utility, based in the UK and the US. Our principal interests are in the transmission and distribution of electricity and gas. We also have interests in related markets, including metering services, liquefied natural gas facilities and property in the UK, as well as electricity Interconnectors in the UK and US. National Grid plc originated from the restructurings of the UK gas industry in 1986 and the UK electricity industry in 1990. We entered the US energy delivery market in 2000 and substantially expanded our UK wireless infrastructure activities in 2004. The UK gas industry was first restructured in 1986 when British Gas was incorporated as a public limited company, British Gas plc. In 1997, Centrica was demerged from British Gas plc which was re-named BG plc. In December 1999, BG plc completed a restructuring programme which resulted in the creation of a new parent company, BG Group plc, and involved separating the UK regulated business, BG plc (re-named Transco plc), from its other businesses. Lattice Group plc was created as the holding company for Transco plc and certain other non-regulated infrastructure service businesses and, in October 2000, it was demerged from BG Group plc and separately listed on the London Stock Exchange. INTRODUCTION 1. 1INTRODUCTION Vocational education (education based on occupation or employment) (also known as vocational education and training or VET) is education that prepares people for specific trades, crafts and careers at various levels from a trade, a craft, technician, or a professional position in engineering, accountancy, nursing, medicine, architecture, pharmacy, law etc. Craft vocations are usually based on manual or practical activities, traditionally non-academic, related to a specific trade, occupation, or vocation. It is sometimes referred to as technical education as the trainee directly develops expertise in a particular group of techniques. In the UK some higher technician engineering positions that require 4-5 year apprenticeship require academic study to HNC / HND or higher City Guilds level. Vocational education may be classified as teaching procedural knowledge. This can be contrasted with declarative knowledge, as used in education in a usually broader scientific field, which might concentrate on theory and abstract conceptual knowledge, characteristic of tertiary education. Vocational education can be at the secondary, post-secondary level, further education level and can interact with the apprenticeship system. Increasingly, vocational education can be recognised in terms of recognition of prior learning and partial academic credit towards tertiary education (e. g. , at a university) as credit; however, it is rarely considered in its own form to fall under the traditional definition of higher education. Vocational education is related to the age-old apprenticeship system of learning. Apprenticeships are designed for many levels of work from manual trades to high knowledge work. However, as the labor market becomes more specialized and economies demand higher levels of skill, governments and businesses are increasingly investing in the future of vocational education through publicly funded training organizations and subsidized apprenticeship or traineeship initiatives for businesses. At the post-secondary level vocational education is typically provided by an institute of technology, university, or by a local community college. The Main objective of vocational education training. †¢Meet education demands of the population, support professional, career development and social protection of individuals; †¢Feed economy with qualified staff competitive both on local and international labour market, ensure a match between the fast changing labor market and VET system; †¢Foster appropriation of the peoples educational capacities with the new social-economic conditions to support self-employment and entrepreneurship; †¢Support student mobility; †¢Ensure professional development of minority groups and create employment opportunities for them; †¢Develop Lifelong Learning; 1. 5 NEED OF THE STUDY:- The need for VET qualifications are provided by government institutions, called Technical and Further Education (TAFE) institutions, as well as private institutions. Industry and employer groups contribute to training policies and priorities, and in developing qualifications that deliver skills to the workforce. Today Many of VET courses incorporate a period of on-site learning, which means you don’t just learn in a classroom, but get priceless industry experience in a genuine work environment. It’s real-world industry experience that ensures your qualifications fully prepare you for employment in your chosen industry. An important part of VET teaching staff are not just industry-aware, but have actual experience in their fields of expertise – maintaining the currency of their knowledge, and modifying their courses to reflect changing industry focus and needs. And that means you learn not only the theory, but also the reality of the subjects you’re studying. 1. 6 LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY:- 1The study is dependent mostly on the data collected from the Internet and SSM related web pages. 2The findings and suggestions are drawn based on the responses of the questionnaire made and the data provided by the organization. 3Only 5% of the organization is taken into consideration while the survey is conducted. 4The project report is done in a period of 8 weeks 4days time forms an important limitation for carrying out the project. 5Accuracy of the study is purely based on the information as given by the respondent. 1. 7 RESEARCH METHODOLOGY:- 1. 7. 1 PERIOD OF STUDY:- The Present study had been undertaken for period of 8 weeks 4 days in which it had divided three stages as such. Stage one is of research problem and collection the literature of the topic chosen stage II is of deciding the research methodology and collecting the data required. Stage-III is of analysis and interpretations by using different statically tools findings and recommendations. It is the conceptual structure within which research is conducted and it constitutes the blueprint for the collection, measurement and analysis of data. It includes an outline of what the researcher will do from writing the hypothesis and its operational implications to the final analysis of data. The research design used for the study is descriptive design. Descriptive research design includes observational methods, case-study methods and survey methods. The primary purpose of descriptive research is to provide an accurate description or picture of the status or characteristics of a situation or phenomenon 1. 7. 3 SOURCES OF DATA:- The relevant data has been collected from the primary sources and secondary sources. The primary data is collected by a questionnaire from the rural unemployed and employed human. For this purpose of data collection, the questionnaire was circulated among the employees to collect information. The secondary data is collected by internet organization journals, magazines, Websites etc. 1. 7. 4 QUESTIONNAIRE ADMINSTRATIONS:- The Questionnaire was prepared after consulting with the project coordinator of Utkarsh one of the activity of SSM. The researcher prepared to set of questionnaire. A three point scale â€Å"very good, good bad† Yes and No was used for this purpose. 1. 7. 5 SAMPLE DESIGN:- A sample of 20 respondents was taken using random sampling. The village† Sagroli† in Tehsil Biloli, in Dist Nanded was an integral part of the Nizam’s state of Hyderabad. As a child and youth, Babasaheb had been well exposed to the plight of the village folk, the down trodden and the under privileged. He was sent to Hyderabad for his education, but something that was due to happen through him at Sagroli, didn’t allow him stay there for long time. On the other hand, his daughter who passed her 4th Std. was deprived of further education since there were no schools in the vicinity of 100 K. M. from Sagroli. All the girls of her age had to stay home. This disturbed Babasaheb. It proved good for the village. The thoughts of social reformation already took shape in his mind, came into being with the establishment of Sanskrit Samvardhan Mandal in 1959, an organization to promote education at grass root level. As a land lord, he had a big heart too to spare a hundred and thirty acres of his agricultural estate for the mission he started. As a person of deed and might, Babasaheb never turned back come what may! The Sanskrit Samvardhan Mandal was carefully nurtured in the hands of devoted and faithful volunteers of Babasaheb’ s team and this day stands among one of the most renowned development organizations in the region. Babasaheb Deshmukh’ vision was not limited to education sphere alone. He took every opportunity to serve the deprived communities. Gradually SSM propagated its service activities into the fields of health, Women and child welfare, Agriculture, environment, watershed development, conservation of National resources and what not. His vision was far ahead of the time. There was a great receptive potentiality in his ways. He tried every thing that he believed, would help the development of rural communities. Though he always acknowledged that he was inspired by the Trio, Mahatma Phule, Maharshi Karve and Karmaveer Bhaurao Patil, the pioneers of education (Particularly for the deprived) in Maharashtra, It is the fact that the quartette gets completed only when his name is added to the list. He’s a kind hearted human being who added height to the eternal values in the society. S. O. S. children’s village, the â€Å"Anand Balgram† the home for the orphan children provides shelter and education to more than 500 god’s children through its associated units. Just not the orphan children, but hundreds of orphan animals, also were blessed enough to seek protection under his care. A typical day in his life would never probably give a hint to any enthusiast that such a simple ONE man had created this vast world of social service in the rural sector. Babasaheb’ s services were duly recognized by the nation and he was bestowed with many honors and rewards at national level platforms. He had six presidential awards conferred upon him, though he humbly avows the felicitation to the credit of all his volunteers. Through the six decades of his tireless journey, Babasaheb left behind him a great inspiration to carry forward and ever widen the scope for human service. SSM has therefore put in efforts to impart quality education to the deprived rural children, especially the girls. We facilitate pre-school to pre-university education on the campus for 4000 students through different schools with hostel facilities. Presently 2000 of them are housed in the hostels on the campus. This makes us one of the largest rural residential schools. The schools and hostels are located on the same campus. As such the progress of the students is closed monitored. The teachers and rectors coordinate and monitor the activities undertaken for the students’ all round development. Thus, besides formal education, value education is also imparted to the students. Good habits such as early rising, doing regular exercises, evening prayer, etc are inculcated in the children. Various cultural activities are also organized to provide an outlet to their aesthetic potential. Education and Training in drawing Painting and Music is also facilitated. There are well equipped library and laboratory facilities in place to develop reading culture and to facilitate scientific experiments respectively. There are large play grounds on the campus where students are trained in various games and sports by trained sports teachers and trainers. We also have a unit, set up in 1983, to provide education to physically challenged students, especially for the deaf and mute. Project Speak Well- Speak Well Initiative is really a very prudent and innovative move by SSM in the last two academic years. The prime objective behind this move was to equip every student with the tool of English language skills that he/she can utilize for the application of any sort of acquired knowledge in his/her practical life to achieve success. With the students and teaching non-teaching staff as the target group, project Speak-Well was formally launched in October 2011. With a Vision of â€Å"Manufacturing Effective English Communicators† and â€Å"Empowering Community with English Language Skills† is the Mission of the project. The main objective of the project is to help the students acquire skills enabling him/her to keep pace with time. The project has a major focus on motivating and encouraging students to interact in English through various activities like loud reading of English newspaper, speech and conversation in school assembly, group discussion, etc. Through training programmes inputs are given to the teachers to help them enhance their English language competencies, acquire novel methodologies and techniques of teaching. Earlier, the students were so hesitant to form even eye-contact and to come forward to utter a few words that they had to be literally pushed to the front to speak. However, after the project was launched, every student started enjoying his stage appearance to articulate in English confidently without any hesitation. They have started reading not only English academic books, but English newspapers also. This was the foundation. We’re now moving to the next step towards making them proficient in English. ZEST (Zeal for Excellence in Student Teacher) is one of the innovative projects initiated by SSM in 2011-12. The vision is to enhance the quality of higher secondary education. Objectives of the project are to –Improve the quality of teaching and learning. 1. Change the existing teaching – learning process. 2. Adopt innovative approach towards education. 3. Create learning-conducive atmosphere. We combined the forces of two units of junior college to create a synergy of the resources, especially the teachers. The project involves teacher’s orientation and training programmes, aimed at improving their subject knowledge and teaching skills. Special coaching is facilitated for various entrance exams. A separate cell has been set up to counsel the students on various career options after HSC. As an impact of the project, the teaching and learning process has become more interactive and interesting. As such, students’ attendance and active participation in the class have increased. Project EQUIP- With an objective of improving quality of and in education, SSM has launched the Project EQUIP (Educational Quality Improvement Programme). The project consists of teachers’ training program, counseling and career guidance for children, motivation of stakeholders like parents, etc. The project aims to motivate the children towards LEARNING. Science workshops- Apart from well-equipped labs, we do have a science workshop to bring out the hidden talents of the young minds. Every year they try out their ideas and at least one science project of our children finds a place at the national level science fair organized by NCERT. The workshop named Khatpat-ghar, provides every opportunity to creative and innovative students to bring out incredibly sophisticated devices related to house hold activities, science, agriculture, every economy and what not. The activity is based on utilization of low cost and waste material. The exhibits are demonstrated at the khatpatghar. The science park named after Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, inaugurated on 25th March 2012, provides an outlet to children’s curiosity and creativity through the working models demonstrating different scientific principles and theories. The models provide the children an opportunity of learning by doing and playing. The park is now also proving to be an open learning centre for children from other schools in the area. Fine arts- Painting Drawing and Classical Music are the optional subjects open for all the students of the school. The students appear for graded examinations at the end of each spell of the training. Educational Tours- Twice a year, educational tours are conducted to give the children an exposure to our rich heritage, in addition to the educational objectives. Process of Appendix Removal Natalija Miller Process Description of Appendix Removal Appendectomy: The appendix itself is a small, finger-like projection off the large intestine. Appendicitis is the inflammation of the appendix due to a block in the opening to the colon, or by an infection (US National Library of Medicine, 2014). An appendectomy then, is the surgical procedure done to remove the appendix, usually in cases where acute appendicitis is present. The procedure is considered highly recommended in cases where appendicitis may be suspected to reduce the possibility of a life-threatening infection due to an appendix rupture (Johns Hopkins Medicine). Causes of Appendicitis: Appendicitis is considered to have multiple causes, including those that involve stools, mucus, bacteria and other organisms like parasites. These cause the appendix to swell, leading to irritation and inflammation. If the appendix then ruptures, those stools, bacteria, etc., then leak into the abdomen and could cause a serious infection. Inflammation of the abdomen due to bacterial infection is known as peritonitis. Antibiotics, further surgery and/or (in some cases) blood transfusions maybe used to treat this condition (Mayo Clinic, 2011). Diagnosis of Appendicitis: Generally, the physician will first inspect the abdomen and evaluate signs and symptoms. Often a light pressure is applied to any areas of pain, and then relieved quickly. Pressing down on the site and letting go quickly should be considerably more painful or discomforting in cases where appendicitis is present. Doctors will often look for what is termed, â€Å"guarding† – the tendency to tighten the abdominal muscles due to the increase in pressure against the inflamed area. Other helpful diagnostic testing may occur to confirm appendicitis (ultrasound, white blood cell count, etc.), or to simply rule other complications out (urine testing for kidney stones) (Mayo Clinic, 2014). It is important to note, however, that there are no tests to completely confirm the existence of appendicitis. Symptoms of Appendicitis: Certain areas and intensities of pain are considered to be more symptomatic than others. It is important to report any of the following to a physician: Pain of the lower right abdomen or pain that travelled there from the midsection. Progressive pain (increase in severity as time progresses). Heightened pain with touch, coughing/sneezing, or certain movements. Nausea and vomiting. Lack of appetite or desire to consume food. Fever/chills. Constipation/Diarrhea Laxatives and other bowel regulating methods are exceptionally dangerous in cases of appendicitis due to their contribution to the risk of rupture. Pain medications should also be avoided to ensure that other sites of pain are not overlooked, preventing a physician from concluding a definitive diagnosis (Johns Hopkins Medicine). Appendectomy Variations: Open Appendectomy: This is a method where an incision will be made in the lower right abdomen – generally no more than 3 inches in diameter – by which the physician can locate and extract the appendix. Laparoscopic Appendectomy: This is performed through several small incisions and a tube-shaped camera (laparoscope) used to locate the appendix for removal. The laparoscope is hooked-up to a monitor for the surgeon to view during the procedure. This method is not only considered to result in less scarring (shown in Figure 1 below), but also lessen the amount of pain surgery results in, decrease length of hospital care, shorten recovery period, and lower infection rates (Johns Hopkins Medicine). Figure 1: Laparoscopic Appendectomy incision site Possible Risks: There are risks associated with the procedure, which include: Infected incision site. Peritonitis. Obstructed bowels (Johns Hopkins Medicine). Possible bleeding Reactions to anesthesia Pus build-up (US National Library of Medicine, 2014). Other risks may be possible depending on specific medical conditions – report to the physician along with any concerns about the procedure (Johns Hopkins Medicine). Procedure: Before: The details of the procedure will be extensively described, as which point permission to perform said procedure will be requested. A list of medications or medical concerns will be collected, and a sedative or anesthesia will be given to induce a relaxed state, allowing the operation to begin. During: All clothing and jewlery will be removed and a gown will be provided to change into. An intravenous (IV) line will be placed in the arm, wrist or hand. Physicians will request a supine position of the operating table (laying on back). An anesthesiologist will monitor all vital signs during the appendectomy. Open Appendectomy: Through the incision in the lower right quadrant, the abdominal cavity will be opened by separating the abdominal muscles, and the appendix will be removed through a process involving sutures (a series of stitches). In the case of a rupture, the cavity will be rinsed thoroughly with saline and drained. The incision will then be cleansed with an antiseptic to reduce the risk of infection. Laparoscopic Appendectomy: A number of incisions will be made for the laparoscope and the instruments needed to extract the appendix. The abdominal cavity will be inflated with carbon dioxide through one of the incisions to allow for a clearer visual. Once the appendix is located it is tied off with sutures and removed. At the end of both methods, the appendix is examined in a laboratory setting, the incisions will be sealed and the wounds will be dressed with a sterile gauze (Johns Hopkins Medicine). Returning to Daily Living: After the procedure, it is recommended that walking take place within a few hours or the following day. Pain medication may be administered to provide a more comforting environment. It is important to progressively increase the solidity of foods to ensure that the body can still consistently regulate itself. Once discharged (usually after a day or two), the incision site must be kept clean and dry (US National Library of Medicine, 2014). Avoid any strenuous activities until the follow –up (2-3 weeks after surgery), for a physician’s recommendations. It is extremely important to notify a physician if any of the following problems arise: Lasting fever of over 101 degrees Fahrenheit. Any irritation at incision sites. Inability and/or lack of desire to consume fluids. Continuous coughing, shortness of breath and/or trouble breathing. Inability to have bowel movements (Johns Hopkins Medicine). Recovery to the point where normal, everyday activities can resume will generally take place between 2-4 weeks after being discharged (US National Library of Medicine, 2014). Having A Gun Very often in life I would find myself strongly disagreeing and upholding the totally opposite point of view about the actions and behavior of those, whose deeds seemed to me rather disadvantageous and harmful to the entire community or society. These kind of actions were mostly coming from government authorities, and quite obviously, there was not much that could have been done in order to refute or override them. Therefore, not only once, the idea of having adequate power and authority to ban these kind of pernicious practices, would appeal to me. For the purpose of decreasing the crime rate, that was the top concern of the Ukrainian citizen, in 1994, some misguided politicians in government adopted the legislation repealing the previous amendment and thus, abolishing the constitutional right to own the handguns. Banning the sale of firearms seems to me a most malicious and reckless deed, that instead of safeguarding and protecting, endangers more the entire society. The Government justified this act by saying that it would protect the innocent citizens. But it failed to even entertain the notion that the enactment of this law would come to protect the right of those who violate the rights of others. It has never occurred to authorities that vicious criminals, in spite of this legislation, will still manage somehow to get the firearms. Innocent people, however, will suffer, because they will be less likely to obtain handguns in order to protect themselves and their families. Therefore, it would not be hard to imagine the carnage of the citizens, should there not be any guns in their homes. The criminals would walk in at any time they desired, they would take whatever they wanted, rape whom they wanted, and shoot whoever would resist. The Government defended the enactment of this law by declaring that people could not be secure as long as there would be handguns around; they could not be secure when three million people in the country had shotguns stuck in the glove compartment of their cars, bedside drawers, pockets and kitchen cabinets. But could they be secure if some criminal would try to take away somebody's car under the threat, rob and rape somebody in the street or try to burglarize somebody's home, knowing that they would not have any guns to protect themselves? The prompt and correct answer is "NO". The government was established to insure that none of our rights would be violated or taken away. It seems to me that the government, by infringing the right of people to keep and bear arms, has failed to provide its citizens with

Concept of Globalisation

Concept of Globalization Globalization means different things to different people. The three important perspectives of globalization are as follows: †¢ To a business executive, globalization refers to a strategy of crossing national boundaries through globalized production and marketing networks. †¢ To an economist, globalization refers to an economic interdependence between countries covering increased trade, technology, labor, and capital flows. †¢ To a political scientist, globalization refers to an integration of a global community in terms of ideas, norms, and values. Because of these differences in perspectives, globalization has been defined in many different ways. The following are the widely used definitions of globalization: †¢ â€Å"Globalization is a free movement of goods, services, people, capital, and information across national boundaries. † †¢ â€Å"Globalization is a process by which an activity or undertaking becomes worldwide in scope. † †¢ â€Å"Globalization is a process of integration of the world as one market. † Form these definitions; it is clear that globalization leads to an integrated global economy. The process of globalization ultimately converts the huge globe into a small global village. Forms of Globalization Globalization is a multi-dimensional process. It has four important dimensions: economic, cultural, political, and environmental. The process of globalization is now influencing these aspects of an economy. A brief description of these forms of globalization is as follows: ECONOMIC GLOBALIZATION: Economic influence is the most obvious part of globalization. Economic globalization is contributed by liberalization, deregulation, privatization, and declining costs of the markets in goods, services, capital, trade, and finance. Economic globalization has speeded up in the recent past. A free-trade doctrine removes the barriers to the flow of goods between countries. The formation of the World Trade Organization (WTO) has given impetus to this process. Multinational companies are another force to boost up economic globalization. CULTURAL GLOBALIZATION: Different countries have different sets of national beliefs, values and norms. The expanding process of globalization has brought these cultural diversities together to form a global culture. Advances in communications, television networks, transportation technology have been reducing the barriers of distance and culture. Over the last several years, global communications have been revolutionized by developments in satellites, digital switching, and optical fiber telephone lines. As a result of such developments, reliable system of commercial jet travel has reduced the time it takes to get from one location to another. This has tremendous impact on the flow of tourists across the globe. Television programmers have made people aware of other cultures and languages. These have reduced the cultural distance between countries. The process of globalization has increased mutual understanding, peaceful coexistence, and learning from each other's experiences. POLITICAL GLOBALIZATION: Nations today are more inter-dependent. They are joining hands to participate in creating macro-political framework for development. There are exchanges of views and experiences between nations regarding the establishment of good governance system, legal system, human rights, free media, property rights, decentralized pattern of governance, relatively free access to state information, and so on. The regional grouping of nations has promoted the integration further and created pressure for democracy and human rights. Because of these global influences, the political system worldwide made a shift away from command and mixed economies to the free-market model. ENVIRONMETAL GLOBALIZATION: The globe today is facing unprecedented problems of global warming, depletion of the ozone layer, acute loss of bio-diversity, and trans-border pollution. In fact, ecological problems like floods, soil erosion, water pollution, air pollution, acid rain, and global warming cross national borders without hindrance. To prevent any further degradation of global ecology, the world community is actively engaged in preventing the growing problem of environment. Today, world attention has been drawn toward conservation of environment, harnessing water resources, and judicious use of non-renewable resource. The world community is, therefore, trying to encourage countries to understand these global environment issues and adopt legal and other measures to protect the environment. Nature of Globalization Globalization promotes international business. The international business is composed of four main categories: (i) world trade, (ii) portfolio investment (iii) direct investment, and (iv) multinational enterprises. A brief description of international business is given below: WORLD TRADE: The oldest form of international business is trading of merchandise. Consumers in one country buy goods, which are produced in another country. This is a common phenomenon. Most of the world trade today is among the industrialized countries. World trade is mostly made up of manufactured goods. The service trade has also been rapidly increasing during recent years. Export business is beneficial for a country not only in terms of trade, but also because it creates export-related jobs. With the growing integration of the world economy, world trade would also increase. In fact, expansion of world trade itself has been made easier by two things. Firstly, technological changes in transport, global network of banking and insurance, and information flows have made it possible to undertake world trade more quickly. Secondly, a number of international and regional agreements or arrangements have been established to promote and coordinate world trade. PORTFOLIO INVESTMENT: International portfolio investment is also known as indirect foreign investment. Portfolio investment is the second main type of globalization. It is the purchase of foreign securities in the form of stocks, bonds, or commercial papers to obtain a return on that investment in the form of dividends, interests, or capital gains. Acquiring foreign stocks and bonds does not confer managerial control of a foreign enterprise on the buyer. Rather, the international portfolio investor is a creditor whose main concern is a decent return on his or her investment. Therefore, the capital flow is greatly affected by relative interest rates and strong currency values, which result in high return for the investors. FOREIGN DERECT INVESTMENT: Foreign direct investment (FDI) is the long-term capital investment. It involves acquisitions by domestic firms of foreign-based factories or any other types of business firms. The investor, thus, enjoys managerial control over the assets of the acquired firm. Direct investment may be financed in a number of ways other than through capital movements. Foreign investments may be financed by borrowing locally, by reinvesting foreign earnings, by the sale to foreign affiliate of non-financial assets such as technology, or through funds generated by licensing fees and payments for management services to the parent company. MULTINATIONAL COMPANIES: FDI is an important vehicle for the birth and growth of multinational companies. A multinational company encompasses both domestic and overseas operations. It is called multinational because it operates across national boundaries. However, its focus is on foreign markets. A multinational company, thus, has all the components of the definition of globalization and international business discussed above. Being multinational in scope and activity, such firms also encounter wide-ranging socio-cultural, political, and legal problems while operating in many different countries. Methods of Globalization There are a number of methods for globalization of business. In each method, there is a choice of strategies to follow. These strategies are sometimes referred to as â€Å"foreign market entry strategies†. If the international business strategy is to be successful, a business firm must carefully analyze the advantages and disadvantages of different entry methods before deciding on its approaches. A brief account of some of the methods of globalization is as follows: EXPORTING: The most widely used and common method of doing business internationally is exporting. A direct export operation is a direct sale by a manufacturer to an overseas customer. Indirect exporting involves selling through an intermediary. Exporting is preferable when the cost of production in the home country is substantially lower than producing goods in foreign markets. Therefore, business firms having cost advantage would like to export their products to foreign markets instead of investing in production facilities there. Exporting is, thus, the first stage in the evolution of international business. Exporting is the best alternative under a given set of conditions. It is the least complex global operations. However, there are some factors, which make exporting less attractive than other alternatives. For example, policies of some governments discriminate against import. In some cases, imports are even banned. There may also be hostility against imports. In these situations, exporting strategy may not be effective. LICENSIG AND FRANCHINSG: Licensing and franchising are important entry and expansion methods. Through these methods, the companies can expand their business. Earnings come to the company through fees and royalties. Today, many western companies have been extensively using licensing and franchising practices. One of the growing trends in international business today has been trademark licensing. This has become a substantial source of worldwide revenue. Licensing offers rapid entry into a foreign market. Under international licensing, a business firm can contractually assign the rights to certain technical know-how, design, intellectual property to a foreign company in return for royalty. In many countries, law regulates such fees or royalties. At times, a licensing agreement may be of cross-licensing type wherein there is mutual exchange of knowledge and patents. In a cross-licensing arrangement, a cash payment may or may not be involved. The advantage of licensing is that the licenser does not have to bear the development costs associated with opening up in a foreign country. The licensee bears the costs. Franchising is a form of licensing in which a parent company (the franchiser) grants another independent entity (the franchise) the right to do business in a prescribed manner. The franchisee buys an established marketing package without the risks of product acceptance, market testing, etc. The franchiser gets foreign market entry at minimum cost, plus a local ntrepreneur. The privilege may be the right to sell the parent company's product, to use its name, to adopt its methods, or to copy its symbols, trademarks and architecture. One of the common forms of franchising involves the franchiser supplying some ingredients for finished products, like coca-cola supplying the syrup to the bottlers. Hilton Hotels might sell a franchise to a local company in Nepal to operate hotels under the Hilton name. FULLY OWNED MANUFACTURING FACILITIES: Bigger corporations establish their own factories abroad. This strategy has some advantages. The corporation owning the factory has full control over production and quality. There is also no risk of developing potential competitors as in the case of licensing and contract manufacturing. However, there may be some problems while operating in a foreign country. The government may impose restrictions on the use of desired technology. Similarly, constraints such as lack of skilled manpower, infrastructural facilities, production bottlenecks, raw material supply etc. may also be encountered. Above all, the corporation may have to invest a lot in terms of financial and managerial resources to operate the plant in its fullest capacity. JOINT VENTURES A joint venture is a partnership in which the domestic firm and the foreign firm negotiates tie up involving one or more of the the following:equity,transfer of technology,investment,production and marketing. The arrangement defines responsibility for performance,accountability and powersharing. MERGER AND ACQUISITION The most extensive form of participation in global market is 100% ownership,which may be achieved by start up,merger or acquisition STRATEGIC ALLIANCE Various terms are used to describe the linkage between firms to jointly pursue a common goal,such as collaborative agreements,strategic alliance and global strategic partnership. EFFECT OF GLOBALISATION Increasing globalization has many effect and consequences on an indivisual business firm as well as the national economy. These effect are both positive as well as negative.
